What "genuine leather" means — and what it does not
The term is used loosely, so it is worth being precise. "Genuine leather" means the product is made of real animal hide rather than a synthetic substitute. It does not, on its own, tell you which layer of the hide was used or how it was finished.
What matters more in practice is how the leather behaves. Real leather softens with use, takes on a slight sheen where it is handled, and develops a patina — a gradual darkening at the corners and fold. Synthetic material does not do this; it stays exactly as it was until it cracks and peels.
If a wallet looks identical after a year of daily use, it was probably not leather.
How to judge construction in thirty seconds
Stitching. Look for even spacing and no loose thread ends, particularly at the corners and around the card slots, which take the most stress. Uneven stitch spacing is the clearest sign of rushed assembly.
Edges. Well-made leather goods have edges that are either folded and stitched or finished with edge paint. A raw, fuzzy cut edge will fray.
The fold. Close the wallet and look at the spine. A good bifold folds cleanly without the leather bunching or the lining wrinkling inside.
Card slots. New slots should be tight. They stretch with use, never the reverse — so a wallet whose slots are already loose out of the box will be dropping cards within months.
