What you are paying for

Two things, mostly: material quality and distinctiveness. Niche houses use naturals and captive molecules that mass-market production cannot afford at scale, which is why a niche fragrance often has more depth in the dry-down and a longer life on skin. The second thing is rarity — you are far less likely to meet someone else wearing Hacivat or Terroni than Sauvage.

The trade-off is that niche is a riskier gift. If you are buying for someone else and cannot test it first, designer perfumes are the safer bet.
