What Sauvage smells like

François Demachy keeps the opening deliberately simple: a single burst of Calabrian bergamot, sharp and clean. What follows is where the Eau de Parfum separates itself from the Toilette — Sichuan pepper and star anise give the heart a spiced lift, lavender keeps it recognisably fougere, and then Papua New Guinean vanilla settles over ambroxan for a dry-down that reads warm and slightly smoky rather than metallic. It is the most versatile fragrance in this catalogue and the reason Sauvage stays the default answer when someone asks for one bottle.

Top notes are Calabrian Bergamot; the heart is Sichuan Pepper, Lavender, Star Anise and Nutmeg; the base settles on Ambroxan and Vanilla.

When to wear it

Comfortable at the office and equally at home at night. The vanilla-ambroxan base makes it excel in cooler months and Egyptian winter evenings; it still works in daytime heat, just apply with a lighter hand. It is at its best in winter and autumn, and still works well in spring.
